Springfield Armory National Historic Site

Overlooking the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts, Springfield Armory National Historic Site offers the story of the nation’‘s first armory. The site’‘s large museum, year-round public programs, exhibits, and special events speak of nearly two centuries of pioneering American military arms manufacturing.

Hours:

Springfield Armory NHS is open to visit and walk the historic grounds. Appreciate the historic buildings, the oldest of which is from 1807, surrounding the old military parade grounds. Imagine the nation’‘s first national armory as it was in the 18th and 19th centuries!

The Museum, gift shop, and extraordinary collections in the Main Arsenal Building are open for your visit:

Labor Day through Memorial Day [fall to spring], Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Memorial Day through Labor Day [summer only], Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Museum at Springfield Armory NHS is closed for the following holidays: New Years; Thanksgiving; and Christmas.

 Directions

Springfield Armory NHS is located at the site of the original Springfield Armory, in the city of Springfield, in southwestern Massachusetts. It can be seen on the ridge overlooking the east side of the Connecticut River and near two major interstate highways, Rt. 91 (N&S) and Rt. 90 (E&W) known as the Massachusetts Turnpike.

From US Interstate Route I-91 (North)
Take Exit 6 from I-91N, go to the 2nd traffic light and turn right onto State Street. Drive east ~.75 miles to the 5th traffic light with the iron fence of the Armory on your left. Turn left onto Federal Street, drive about 100 yards, and enter through the main gate to your left onto the grounds Springfield Armory NHS shares with Springfield Technical Community College (STCC). The sign reading "Springfield Technical Community College" is seen with the Armory Museum sign to the left. Turn left inside the gate and follow the signs to the Museum at the opposite end of Armory Square.

From US Interstate Route I-91 (South)
Take Exit 7 from I-91S, go to the 2nd traffic light and turn left under the highway [Rt.91] onto State Street. Drive east ~.8 miles to the 6th traffic light with the iron fence of the Armory on your left. Follow the directions above from this point.

From US Interstate 91 (North).

From Massachusetts Turnpike US Route I-90 East or West)
Take Exit 4, to I-91 South ‘‘Springfield’‘. Follow the directions from US Interstate Route I-91 (South) from this point.

From Route 291[entering from the Northeast], From US Interstate Route 91 (North or South)
Take Exit 8 to Route 291. Get into the right lane. Take Exit 3, Armory Street. At the end of the ramp, get into the right lane at the traffic light. Turn right onto Armory Street South. At the 3rd light, turn right onto Taylor Street. Take an immediate left onto Federal Street. Go about 4/10th of a mile and turn into the main gate onto the site Springfield Armory NHS shares with Springfield Technical Community College (STCC). Turn left inside the gate and follow the signs to the Museum at the opposite end of Armory Square.

From Massachusetts Turnpike, US I-90 driving west
Take Exit 6, ‘‘Springfield’‘. At the end of the ramp, turn left onto Route 291. Take the Armory Street exit. Turn right & get into the left lane. Keep left, turn left, through a "Yield" intersection, then through a traffic light ¾ of the way around the large rotary. Turn right onto Armory Street South after the light. Follow the directions above from here.

 Things To Do
 

Springfield Armory NHS offers seasonal historical programs presented by the park staff, authors, scholars, and community leaders. The Schedule Of Events is regularly updated.
* An annual event, "Three Centuries of Soldiers and their Weapons", in which 'Living Historians' present Springfield Armory's historic weapons from the late 1700's until the Armory closed in 1968, is commemorated during Armed Forces Day, each second weekend in May. FREE!!
* Another annual event, "The Big-Band Concert", held on the Saturday following July 4th, commemorates the September 1943 Benny Goodman "Spotlight Band" concert at the Armory, with regional entertainers and 1940's-style big band. Dance instruction is included first with the concert to follow. It is a most popular event!! FREE!!
* Springfield Armory NHS also offers regularly scheduled 2nd floor Rifle Room 1.5 hour guided tours of the Study Collection (for $12.00 per person). This large room contains two-thirds (~5,600 weapons) of the Museum's total extraordinary collection.
* An after-hour, specially designed, 1.5 hr, reserved private tour for $175.00 per 10 person group.
* The Museum displays a fifth of the collection of historic industrial machinery and weapons. FREE!!
* For scholars and researchers, the Musuem has a large collection of archives, microfilm, etc.
