Though best-known for the celebrities who retreat here seasonally, the small island of Martha's Vineyard became a hip haven to begin with thanks to its peaceful parks, sandy beaches and lush landscapes.
Smith College Museum of Art isn't overwhelming in size but it does boast a very well-rounded collection of fine art. In addition to works by well-known Europeans from the last two decades like Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne, John Everett Millais and Pablo Picasso, and American artists like Childe Hassam, George Inness and Thomas Eakins, the museum's permanent holdings also includes pieces of African, Asian, Native American (including a piece Jaune Quick-To-See Smith) and Contemporary art. Thoughtfully curated changing exhibitions range widely in medium and theme, from design objects to photographs and installations.
