When Mother Nature calls over Massachusetts way, it's the Berkshires, a rugged mountain range stretching across the western edge of the state, that pick up, a place popular with outdoorsy types for the abundance of trails on offer and the arts-oriented for the local selection of cultural attractions.
Housed in a stately Neoclassical building, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts is acclaimed as one of America's largest fine arts museums. Amongst its permanent collection find ancient Greek and Roman artifacts, Asian art, works by Renaissance masters, Impressionists and other historic artistic movements as well as a selection of pieces in a variety of mediums by contemporary talents. Those with an interest in cultural accoutrements will want to leave time for a stop to see textiles and fashion designs, while also "note" worthy is the MFA's expansive collection of musical instruments from around the world and over the ages. A range of changing exhibits rounds out the museum's already well-rounded collection, check the calendar for details.
