When Mother Nature calls over Massachusetts way, it's the Berkshires, a rugged mountain range stretching across the western edge of the state, that pick up, a place popular with outdoorsy types for the abundance of trails on offer and the arts-oriented for the local selection of cultural attractions.
The whaling industry shaped decisively much of coastal New England, and it's this history that is the focus of the New Bedford Whaling Museum (NBWM) in New Bedford, a harbor-side city with whales and whaling at its heart. In addition to 44,000 square feet of exhibition space showcaseing everything from huge model ship to whaling tools, logbooks and old photographs, to decorative arts items and fine art paintings, the NBWM also has a theater, research library and conservatin space. Changing exhibits range in theme from whale skeletons to works by marine artists to scrimshaw (whalebone carvings). Educational programs and lectures are held regularly, check the calendar for information.
