Though best-known for the celebrities who retreat here seasonally, the small island of Martha's Vineyard became a hip haven to begin with thanks to its peaceful parks, sandy beaches and lush landscapes.
Set amongst a well-tended spread of groomed shrubs and lofty trees, the historic House of the Seven Gables, serene yet somehow secretive, appears at first brush much as it must have done when it served as inspiration for Nathaniel Hawthorne when he penned his novel "The House of the Seven Gables". In fact, the two - the writer and this residence - have been permanently linked for visitors since Hawthorne's home of birth was moved to the site. A guided tour of the larger "Seven Gables" mansion reveals a selection of historic artifacts, photographs and rare books spread out amongst its rooms, and offers an introduction to the lives of some of the city's notables. Admission to the mansion also includes access to Nathaniel Hawthorne's house, the estate's gardens, the Counting House and the waterfront.
